Night on Bald Mountain: the boards
Every panel from the five windows, with the board on the left and the real frame it was traced from on the right. Under each pair: Gemini’s cold shot read (size, angle, camera move, subject motion) and my note. Above each window is the tool’s continuity verdict, left in because it’s wrong in an instructive way: it reads same-shot panels as jump cuts, the same mistake automatic cut detection makes on this film. Two fire panels (2 and 2B) are my own traces after Grok’s moderation refused them. The argument is in the main post.
0:14.0–0:40.5The Unfold
Gemini’s cold continuity read (it saw only these panels’ source frames, and didn’t know which panels share a shot): “The sequence effectively establishes a dark, mythic mood reminiscent of classic gothic animation, moving logically from the mountain summit to the vulnerable village below. Spatial progression along the vertical axis is mostly clear and intuitive as the demon casts its influence downward. However, the opening is padded with two consecutive push-in shots on the static peak that delay the reveal unnecessarily. Additionally, the introduction of the winged spirits in the final shot feels disjointed because their manifestation from the shadow is omitted. Tightening the front end and adding a visual bridge for the spirits would make the short cut completely cohesive.”

Angle flips high: his hand's shadow pours down the cliff.

4 · DISSOLVE · 0:37.6 · 1.8s EWS · overhead · tilt down · motion down
Down again, to the village under the shadow.

5 · CUT · 0:39.4 · 1.1s WS · eye · static · motion left to right
Rooftops at eye level. The first sideways move of the night.
1:42.0–2:10.0The Summoning
Gemini’s cold continuity read (it saw only these panels’ source frames, and didn’t know which panels share a shot): “The cut delivers a visually compelling, cohesive narrative that successfully escalates from an eerie cemetery awakening to a full supernatural airborne hunt. Screen direction is strictly maintained, pivoting cleanly from vertical ascension in the graveyard sequence to disciplined right-to-left horizontal momentum across the night sky. The primary disruption occurs at the transition into the aerial ride, where rapid visual morphing temporarily obscures entity identities. Once the demonic steeds and hooded rider stabilize into distinct silhouettes, narrative clarity quickly recovers.”

1 · window opens · 1:42.0 · 3.2s WS · low · static · motion up
Graveyard, low and wide. Mist, a willow, waiting.

1B · same shot · 1:45.2 · 1.6s WS · low · static · motion up
The first spirit tears upward. Vertical is the law here.

2 · CUT · 1:46.8 · 4.2s MS · low · push in · motion none
A monument in the dark; the camera starts to sink.

2B · same shot · 1:51.0 · 4.0s MS · low · tilt up · motion up
A wraith peels off the stone and the camera tilts with it.

2C · same shot · 1:55.0 · 3.6s WS · low · tilt up · motion up
Everything rising at once. No cut; the move gathers them.

3 · CUT · 1:58.6 · 4.7s WS · high · track left · motion right to left
Up becomes right-to-left. One cut turns the whole crowd ninety degrees.

4 · DISSOLVE · 2:03.3 · 4.2s MWS · eye · track left · motion right to left
Riders surface out of the cloud bands.

5 · CUT · 2:07.5 · 2.5s MS · eye · track left · motion right to left
Close on one rider. The crowd gets a face.
3:34.0–4:02.0The Fire Dancers
Gemini’s cold continuity read (it saw only these panels’ source frames, and didn’t know which panels share a shot): “The sequence tells a visually compelling and evocative transformation narrative that clearly follows the story bible. The progression from magical flame to dancers, grotesque beasts, and finally diminished squirming imps is clearly staged and legible. Spatial continuity is maintained cleanly by keeping the demon consistently looming in the upper frame while the summoned figures occupy the lower ledge. The only noticeable weakness is the shot pair of 4 and 5, where back-to-back static high-angle wide shots interrupt the choreography's momentum. Tightening this transition ensures the climax lands with full dramatic impact.”

1 · window opens · 3:34.0 · 5.2s MWS · eye · static · motion away from camera
A flame on the rock, his claw lifting away.

2 · CUT · 3:39.2 · 2.6s MS · eye · static · motion up
The flame mounds up and starts to have hips. (Traced locally: Grok's moderation refused this panel.)

2B · same shot · 3:41.8 · 2.7s MS · eye · static · motion left to right
Three dancers stand up out of the fire. Transformation, not a cut. (Traced locally.)

3 · CUT · 3:44.5 · 4.5s WS · high · static · motion left to right
Wide and high: they're tiny, they're on his palm. Grok drew him looming; the frame only implies him.

3B · same shot · 3:49.0 · 4.5s WS · high · static · motion left to right
Nine seconds on the same wide. The scale is the joke.

4 · CUT · 3:53.5 · 1.5s MS · low · static · motion up
Closer. Arms up, and the bodies start to go wrong.

4B · same shot · 3:55.0 · 2.7s MS · eye · static · motion none
Pig, wolf, goat. Same layout, new species.

5 · CUT · 3:57.7 · 2.1s CU · low · push in · motion toward camera
His face, two seconds. Tiny to enormous in one splice.

6 · CUT · 3:59.8 · 1.0s WS · high · static · motion right to left
Back to the hand, sweeping right to left over them.

7 · CUT · 4:00.8 · 1.2s MS · high · static · motion up
Smoke clears to imps. The next transformation is already loading.
5:55.0–6:23.0The Bells
Gemini’s cold continuity read (it saw only these panels’ source frames, and didn’t know which panels share a shot): “The sequence effectively captures the gothic atmosphere, chiaroscuro lighting, and thematic impact of the sacred bell tolls driving back the demonic horde. However, the spatial geography is severely degraded by constant screen-direction flips during the minion stampede. Rather than appearing as a cohesive, desperate flight into crevices, the imps seem to reverse direction every time the holy light flashes. Additionally, the climactic transformation of Chernabog suffers an abrupt 180-degree axis break between shots 9 and 10 as he suddenly faces away from the camera.”

1 · TOLL 1 · 5:55.0 · 3.5s MCU · low · static · motion down
He's lit on the toll and goes dark as it rings out.

2 · CUT · 5:58.4 · 3.2s WS · eye · static · motion left to right
Demons in red, moving left to right. The cut lands in the rest.

2 · TOLL 2 · 6:01.7 · 2.5s WS · eye · static · motion right to left
Same shot. The flash X-rays them to bone; the board's arrows flip.

2 · light · 6:04.2 · 1.8s WS · eye · static · motion left to right
Color comes back as the toll decays. Direction flips back.

3 · CUT · 6:05.9 · 1.8s MWS · eye · static · motion none
New ledge, same crowd. Again the cut sits between tolls.

3 · TOLL 3 · 6:07.7 · 2.8s WS · eye · static · motion right to left
Bones again, recoiling right to left.

3 · light · 6:10.5 · 2.5s WS · eye · static · motion left to right

4 · light · 6:17.7 · 4.5s MCU · low · static · motion down
He wraps himself in the wings as the light goes.

5 · CUT · 6:22.2 · 0.8s WS · high · static · motion left to right
Near silence. The last of them slide down into the cracks.
7:20.0–7:50.0The Fold
Gemini’s cold continuity read (it saw only these panels’ source frames, and didn’t know which panels share a shot): “The sequence effectively communicates the mythic transformation and gothic mood, clearly mirroring classic dark fantasy animation conventions. The thematic arc from awakening to re-folding into the mountain silhouette is readable and visually cohesive. However, the sequence stumbles in editorial rhythm by cutting repeatedly between nearly identical static low-angle medium shots of the same subject (Shots 2 through 5). These cuts create jarring jump cuts in the character's arm positions rather than presenting a fluid, continuous summoning gesture. Varying the camera distance or letting the animation play across sustained single shots would significantly enhance visual power.”

1 · window opens · 7:20.0 · 4.5s WS · low · tilt up · motion none
Tilt up off the graves into empty blue. A beat of nothing.

2 · DISSOLVE · 7:24.5 · 4.0s MS · low · static · motion up
